A Pension Fund Message from WREA--April 22, 2010
PEW Study ranks WRS as a national leader
A new study on public pension systems by the Pew Center on the States gives Wisconsin high marks for the Wisconsin Retirement System. According to the report, "In 2000, just over half the states had fully funded pension systems. By 2006, that number had shrunk to six states. By 2008, only four—Florida, New York, Washington and Wisconsin—could make that claim."

Wisconsin Research Institute Report casts negative light on WRS
In late February, the Wisconsin Public Research Institute (WPRI) under the leadership of George Lightbourn released a report that compared the Wisconsin Retirement System (WRS) to private sector pensions.
His report says that Wisconsin Public Employees (including teachers) have too rich of a plan, that taxpayers foot the bill, and benefits should be reduced.
WREA views this report as an attack on the Wisconsin Retirement System (WRS).
The Department of Employee Trust Funds (ETF) Secretary Dave Stella issued a timely response to clarify some of Mr. Lightbourn's key points in the report. In addition, you may find Bruce Murphy's comments which appeared in Milwaukee Magazine of interest.
