Today, March 18, 2019 the State of Wisconsin Investment Board (SWIB) issued a press release announcing that SWIB Trustees have approved incentive compensation payments based on SWIB’s performance over the past five years, which generated $224.5 million above benchmark returns after all costs. This pay-for-performance portion of employee compensation totaled approximately $9.8 million and is 15 percent less than last year. The 2018 awards are the lowest amount paid in the past five years and represent only 2.0 percent of SWIB’s overall costs for managing more than $110 billion in assets.
Incentive compensation is based on an employee’s individual contributions to the success of the organization and trust fund performance. It also allows us to hire and retain the experts needed to provide low-cost internal management.
